Atomic Junction gas explosion: 4 people killed, properties burnt
Residents were thrown into a state of pandemonium following the piercing sound of the explosion as well as the giant scary fireball that was formed in the sky. The first explosion was heard at about 7:20pm. A second explosion was heard few minutes later and the fire caught an adjacent TOTAL fuel station and nearby taxi park.
It is currently unclear what triggered the fire, but some eyewitnesses said it started from an offloading gas tanker. The explosion occurred at the MANSCO gas station at Atomic Junction, Accra.
Life is returning to normalcy around the area this morning as unlookers gathered to see things for themselves, but the entire scene of the incident has been cordoned by the authorities on ground.
The Police who have been at the site of the explosion, MANSCO Gas Filling Station have blocked vehicular movements towards the area, and traffic on the main Accra Central and NI Highway to Aburi road has been diverted.
The fire which was reported to have started at about 7 pm on Saturday night also caught an adjacent filling station and setting ablaze many vehicles.
One man was confirmed dead Saturday evening after he was reported to have jumped to his death during the explosion, but as at this morning, a total number of 4 deaths were reported.
Hundreds are walking to the scene of the explosion this morning to see for themselves what the fire which caused thousands to flee their residence left in its wake.
